A housing co-operative (also called a cooperative housing society) is member-owned housing. Instead of each home being owned by an outside landlord or a single private owner, the residents collectively own and democratically govern the housing — typically one member, one vote — and share responsibility for its upkeep and decisions.
When you rent, an outside landlord owns the property and you have no ownership stake. In a condominium you individually own your unit and share common areas. In a housing co-operative you instead become a member of the cooperative that owns the whole property, and your membership gives you the right to occupy a home plus a say in how the community is run. The model emphasises collective ownership and self-governance rather than individual title to a unit.
In India a cooperative housing society is a housing co-operative registered under cooperative law — for societies operating across more than one state, with the Central Registrar of Cooperative Societies (CRCS). Members jointly own the land and buildings through the society and manage them collectively. The societies listed here are drawn from that official registry.
A resident-owned community (ROC) is a manufactured-home community that its residents own together as a cooperative. Instead of paying lot rent to an outside park owner, the homeowners form a co-operative that buys the land, and each household becomes a member with one vote in how the community is run — keeping costs stable and decisions local. The U.S. communities listed here come from the ROC USA network of resident-owned communities.
